Jan 24

Hey all,

As Ben noted, the next presentation / BoF session will be Wednesday, January 31st, starting at 8:30 PM in Squires 236, and going until 10:30. I do not anticipate a long presentation, and instead having a rather long Q&A session. That said, if there is anything you would like addressed, and know it beforehand, I strongly encourage you to e-mail me at elbles AT sessys DOT com, and I will attempt to integrate your questions into my presentation. The deadline for submission will be Sunday at 6:00 PM - I apologize for the short notice, but my schedule is sort of tight. I am looking forward to seeing all of you there, to start another semester of VTLUUG off.

Hey all,

Due in part to the terrific turnout we saw at the Crash Courses this past week, we are sponsoring an Installfest this semester, which will occur on Sunday, October 15th, from 1:00 PM till 6:00 PM in GBJ 102. Officers and members will be on hand to assist in the installation of CentOS, Debian, Fedora Core, Gentoo, Ubuntu, and Solaris, as well as to oversee the raffle of a wide variety of O’Reilly technical books - something that was a big hit at our last Installfest.

All are welcome to attend - no registration is necessary, and the event is also completely free, with no charge for any of the software (we can’t very well charge for free software, after all). We strongly encourage everyone in attendance to backup their data, as an operating system install is not without risks. If anyone should have any questions about the Installfest, please feel free to post on the forums so that we may answer your questions. We are looking forward to seeing all of you on the 15th!

We now have the dates/times/rooms for the Crash Courses!

Crash Course 1:
Monday, the 11th of September
7 PM to 9 PM
Squires, Room 236

This seminar will cover the absolute basics of *nix. Everything from what it is, to basic command line commands that you will need to survive in a Unix world. Laptops are welcome, and are in fact encouraged! If you have a Linux Live-CD, please bring it so you can participate! We will have a limited number for those that do not bring one.

Crash Course 2:
Tuesday, the 12th of September
6 PM to 8:30 PM
Squires, Room 116

This seminar will focus more on actually running and using a Linux / Unix system. Topics such as managing updates, working with Office documents, playing music and movies, and configuring your system will be covered. We will also delve into some more advanced things like getting an eye-candy XGL desktop up and running. Once again, laptops are welcome! If you have a Linux Live-CD, please bring it so you can participate! We will have a limited number for those that do not bring one.

If you are new to Linux/Unix and want to learn more, this is the perfect oppurtunity. If you are seasoned in the Unix realm, please come by and contribute your knowledge! The seminars will be casual and open.

Feel free to spread the word.

Teachers, you are welcome to invite your students to the seminars!
Feel free to e-mail your questions to an officer or ask on the forums.
