Welcome back to the Fall ‘07 semester!

For those who did not know, the VTLUUG experienced a reorganization at the end of last semester. A club charter was drafted and ratified, and elections were held as per the new charter. It is located under the Files section of the website so you can peruse it at your leisure. The new officers are on the contact page (check the tabs above). Any questions, comments, complaints or suggestions should be directed towards the appropriate officer, or the generic vtluug@vtluug.org address.

But enough of that.. on to the events we have planned for this semester.

Install Fest: The semesterly InstallFest has been set for September 16th, from 12 PM till 6 PM, in Squires Room 345. Of course walk-ins are welcomed (and encouraged). For more information head over to the Get Involved thread.
Crash Course The Crash Courses for the semester have been set for September 24th and September 25th, from 7:30 PM till 9 PM each night in Colonial Hall in Squires. The Crash Courses will be in the form of presentations we invite our guests to follow with their own computers. Those of you who know Colonial Hall know that we’ll have plenty of room, so come on out and try something new, or just brush up on your skills.

Bi-weekly Meetings: So, this year instead of having haphazardly scheduled BOFs the LUUG will meet every other week, alternating between Monday and Tuesday) at 7:30 pm in Squires. These meetings will be more open than the presentation style lectures we have traditionally held. In the week(s) before the meeting a thread will be started in the forum where members can toss about topics for discussion. By the weekend an agenda will be posted on the website so everyone knows what to expect when they come to a meeting. Posts will be made, and emails sent out over the listserv as these events creep closer.

To keep up to date on all of the LUUG’s events feel free to subscribe to the calendar and/or join the listserv. If you have any specific problems, issues, or want to share something jump on the forum and make a post.

Fall 2006 Installfest

Hey all,

Due in part to the terrific turnout we saw at the Crash Courses this past week, we are sponsoring an Installfest this semester, which will occur on Sunday, October 15th, from 1:00 PM till 6:00 PM in GBJ 102. Officers and members will be on hand to assist in the installation of CentOS, Debian, Fedora Core, Gentoo, Ubuntu, and Solaris, as well as to oversee the raffle of a wide variety of O’Reilly technical books - something that was a big hit at our last Installfest.

All are welcome to attend - no registration is necessary, and the event is also completely free, with no charge for any of the software (we can’t very well charge for free software, after all). We strongly encourage everyone in attendance to backup their data, as an operating system install is not without risks. If anyone should have any questions about the Installfest, please feel free to post on the forums so that we may answer your questions. We are looking forward to seeing all of you on the 15th!

Hey all!

Welcome back to Blacksburg for those that left over the summer!

As per our normal tradition, we will be holding a planning meeting about one week into the semester to work out our events for the next 4 months or so. Everyone is welcome to come, of course!

Tablet PC Survey
icon1 Sean | icon2 Event, News | icon4 04 4th, 2006| icon3Comments Off

As some of you might know, the College of Engineering here at Tech has recently changed their computer requirement for incoming freshmen to a Tablet PC from the previous requirement of a PC laptop. Of course, it is often thought that an organization such as ours would have a negative bias towards such a decision, as it limits the ability for incoming students (and potential members) to use Linux on the laptop that they will be using everyday. This does not even take into account the dissatisfaction many have with having to pay more for a tablet, while getting less at the same time. With all this in mind, I am asking that all members take the following survey at their earliest convenience, if it is possible. VTLUUG is collaborating in this survey with VTMUG (Virginia Tech Macintosh User’s Group), if for no other reason than to publish what actual student’s thoughts are to those responsible for the requirement, so incoming freshmen would not have to deal with the headache that tablets might be. I thank you, in advance.
